A lot of guitar players buy guitar after guitar working their way up to the upper line models. Why not save money and buy one from the start. I had a low end Gibson Epiphone for about 10 years. I've been saving my money for a while and then finally I decided to get something nice. My reasoning for picking the SG over the Les Paul, or even a nice Strat or Ibanez, was that some of my favorite bands play with SG's. I dont know if it's the best or not, I'll probably never know because I'll never buy another guitar again(except a rickenbacker 330 oneday:) ).

The guitar itself seems a masterpiece to me. I'm no Guitar Tech but I've been told that since Gibson and many other companies moved away from handcrafted to maching made instruments that the quality just isnt the same. In spite of that the guitar seems flawless to me. I've been told by a Tech that there is a slight bend on my fretboard on the low E side and on the hight E side it is perfectly straight, and that would keep me from attaining perfect toneality and action in the neck and strings. Another Tech told me it didnt matter that much... I dunno. It seems gr8 to me.

Besides that my skills have really increased since buying this Guitar, just the excitment of owning such a fine piece of equipment had cause me to spend more time playing and practicing a lot. Also it is so easy to play, everything from the action to the sound, the fretboard is extremely accessable esp at the bottom of the neck. This guitar is a joy to play. If you want an SG go for the Standard or higher. Dont go for the lower models.

This guitar is the best playing, best sounding guitar I have ever owned, and I have been playing for 30 years! I grew up on Fenders and through the years have never found a Gibson that really "felt right." Now my Strat is feeling neglected! I think Gibson went through a period of poor quality control but looks like they have really got it together now. Fretwork, tuners, control knobs, everything is top notch! And the humbuckers can do it all musically. Plays like a dream!

I bught this guitar and I just enjoy it. The sound is very impressive just like it's more expensive brothers. The look is great and the total feel of the guitar is what you expect from Gibson. Don't be fooled into believing that this is just a step up from the Epiphone SG. This is the real deal and for the price you can't beat it. Only A Gibson IS Good Enough ! Play and enjoy !

Features:

Tuners are the green keys and I love them. Both LPs and my ES have them. The only disadvantage to the faded finish is that you can plainly see the one piece that runs from the neck down to the strap button instead of being blended into the two side pieces. Frets are large, well finished, but very large.

Quality:

Depends on how picky you are. The action was very high out of the box. The bridge pickup was set just as high. After lowering both the guitar was set. No need for anyone to setup the instrument. Intonation was perfect as was fretting. Finish? It is smoothed and pore filled mahogany. I worry less about this guitar than any of my others. It is robustly made - made for playing. This will last as long if not longer than any of my others including the oldest being the 1969 ES 345.

Value:

I paid 9 shipping included. Value? A Gibson for under 0 and it's not a crappy import? I am loathe to give anything a "10" but this guitar is very close.

Desirability:

Ever since Woodstock when I saw the Dead, the Who and Santana all sporting SGs, I knew I had to have one.

Sound:

How do two humbuckers sound? Like a Gibson. This guitar sounds as good as any other Gibson I have played or heard. I do notice the pickups being any "hotter" because of the lack of covers. I play Fusion - loud jazz. This guitar is more versatile than my ES 345 TD, varitone and all. I play though a Fender amp and a Marshall. They both compliment the humbuckers beautifully.

Ease of Use:

The neck is amazingly fast - I don't think I want another nitrocellulose neck again. And I find myself constantly going past the last fret - access is that easy. Rolloff on the tone controls is fairly linear. Weight distribution is fine - the neck is not too heavy for the body. Learning curve? Sure - playing the guitar is nothing BUT a huge learning curve Very easy to get started on this guitar.

Overall:

I have nothing but high praise for this guitar. I thought I would be disappointed with the "finish." I am not. I heard "stories" about frets not being dressed properly or strap buttons being less than average, or tuners not holding pitch. None of that was true.

i bought this guitar back in january this year and i still play it every day the neck plays fast with medium action and it has great soundind pickups the guitar looks great but it gets small dents and scratches super easily beacause of the really soft mohogany body. but thats great if you want your guitar to eventually look like a truly loved and played instument not just a looker P.S.. if your cry over scratches this is not your guitar

Exactly one month TO THE DAY after I bought this SG, the headstock fractured like it'd been hit with a sledgehammer. I cried like the day I was born. Upon emailing Gibson's customer support department, I found out that if you have purchased your Gibson product from the U.S. via an authorized dealer, there is a lifetime repair/replacement warranty on all Gibson items.

I also did some research and discovered that Gibson headstocks break with little to no encouragement. They're just poorly designed, because they're set at a 17-degree downward angle, which isn't helpful to the woodgrain, thus greatly weakening the headstock. They're usually a very easy fix, and they break very cleanly. After first repairs, people usually never have another problem.

Despite the inherent flaw in the headstock, it's a brilliant guitar, even if you have to baby it more than you'd ever have to baby a Fender or Squier instrument. You can use the tapping method a lot easier than any Fender (shorter scale length of 24.75") and the two volume+two tone controls plus 3-way toggle switch make for incredible versatility. Jangle pop, rock, metal, country rhythm, blues, jazz, and swing are all possible with this guitar.

A major playability merit that sticks out to me is the fact that no matter whether you're playing rhythm or lead, this guitar WILL accomodate you. The neck and the razor-thin action are perfect for chording, soloing, tapping... whatever you can think up, this guitar will let you put it through the numbers (assuming you're half as good as this guitar is, heh).
